Why hipix?
JPEG on the left and hipix on the right. Both files of similar size in KB. JPEG is also limited to a single picture per file, and it does not allow encapsulating any rich media tags, which we use every day, like audio tags, text, location, URL, contact. hipix enables all that is missing in JPEG, and more. In the past file compatibility was a big issue, as sharing of pictures demands the support of the file format on various devices.
Apple solved video compatibility issues with its MP4 container, with which files of various compression schemes can be wrapped. A MOV or MP4 or AVI file may contain video of Motion JPEG, MPG-1/2/4, DIVX, VP7/8/9, MS VC1, H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, etc.
However, efficient decoding and display of all these file formats (especially when dealing with high resolutions) requires hardware acceleration. Today’s Smartphones, Settop Boxes and TV-Sets, include hardware acceleration support for all the leading video CoDecs. Some of these video CoDecs use far more advanced compression tools for Intra coding (i.e. independent still image compression) than those, which are used by JPEG.
Compatibility has also turned to be a rather simpler hurdle to overcome, as long as the required addition for a worthy change is a minor software addition, or an update to an existing software application or component. hipix enables fast and simple replacement to JPEG, enabling double compression ratio, while improving the subjective picture quality. It also enables the encapsulation of multi audio/text/url/location/contact and even video tags with the hipix still-picture file. The underlying CoDec of hipix is supported by all Smartphones, Settop Boxes and TV-Sets.
